A well manicured garden or lawn can certainly be improved if you add some nice garden furniture. There are some very important aspects when choosing the right furniture as they will to fit into the existing theme. It is delightful to discover that the modern day garden furniture is built on the goals to fulfill the stylish and demanding expectations of the modern day user. Make sure it matches the theme you have.

Wrought Iron Garden,

Compliment your backyard by adding a large bar and a fireplace to create a very cozy outdoor dining room you can enjoy. Take time to choose your furniture carefully. There are many ways you can use your furniture to transform your backyard. Your backyard can be turned into a large outdoor dining area. Your backyard needs to be large enough to house those furniture and embellishments you may like to add later.

Wrought Iron Furniture,

Modern garden furniture comes in a variety of materials from wood based to metal. The modern outdoor furniture can be classic and jazzy at the same time. It is important to be able to spend time to maintain it or it won’t last very long. Outdoor furniture is built with durability but that does not mean you can take them for granted. Your furniture will still need regular maintenance and care whatever the quality level.

Comfort should be the number one priority in your garden furniture when you find one that matches your theme! Cushioned seats are great if you value comfort, love seats would be pretty cool for young couples, and lounges to rocking chairs for lazy evenings outdoors. Place small side tables to let your guests use them to place their drinks or snacks during a conversation. Outdoor furniture is available in a rich spectrum of colors to choose from! Purchase from a collection or you can pick from pieces and mix and match.

Any type of social gathering outdoors requires the use of suitable garden furniture. Large tables that let you entertain more guests at one time would be perfect. For formal settings, oblong tables would be great and you can entertain between ten to twelve guests at the same time but a round table is ideal if the space is smaller and you can have between four to six guests at one time. A bar is essential if you desire an adult entertaining space. There is a wide variety of designs you can choose from to suit your taste and preferences.
Wrought Iron Design

Flower seeds are the perfect way for many to grow beautiful flowers and vegetables. Almost everything that people eat comes from a type of seed. Tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, everything can be grown from a simple seed. However, flower seeds make wonderful container plants. If one starts a flower bed with tiny seeds, the wait time for a bountiful garden may be increased, but if one know how to start the seeds beforehand, that time can be cut in half.

One way to make sure that flower seeds get the proper start is to check the potting mix. Many potting mixes have special nutrients added to the soil in the potting mix that can help the infant seed to maturity.

organic seed
If one is planted deep enough in nutrient enriched soil, then more then likely the seed will grow faster and larger than without added nutrients. So when one chooses a potting mix to help begin flower seeds, make sure that added nutrients are in the mix. The best way to ensure that, is to read all the extras on the potting mix bag.

Petunias are the perfect flower seeds that can be started indoors and transplanted into a garden at a later time. To make sure blooms are ready for the spring, one should start the petunias indoors six to eight weeks before the last frost. Then these small plants can be moved into the garden for a bountiful flower array.

Because they come in so many varieties, colors are not an issue for these heat tolerant plants. They can grow basically anywhere, and as long as they are watered properly, one can enjoy these flowers all season long.

flower box garden
Flower seeds are the perfect way to make a huge container garden quickly and easily. No matter what type is chosen, a person can treat beautiful flower masterpieces on a raised flower box garden or even a pot.

Flower seeds offer some of nature’s most amazing colors and beauty to behold.

But how many other decorations can make this same claim? Admittedly, there are very few; perhaps this explains why, in recent years, indoor water fountains have become such popular pieces of interior décor. These charming works of art are so much more than mere dramatic, aesthetically appealing masterpieces: the sound of softly flowing, trickling, bubbling water has a profound calming effect on your peace of mind. Few things in life are so relaxing as coming home from a long day at the office to rest in your favorite chair, the soothing sounds of a wall water fountain gently cooing in the background.

When it comes to garden ornamentation, the choices are endless. You have the realistic, the unrealistic, the beautiful, the gaudy, the cute, and even the goofy ways to decorate your lawn and garden. Sometimes nosy passer-bys can even see memorial tributes that are blended in amongst the decorations. It is not a farfetched thought that you can guess a couple’s personality just a little bit, based upon their means of lawn décor. For example, if a couple has religious garden décor with Bible verses around it, it is logical to think them to be of Christian faith.

Down in the great panhandle state of Florida, there are countless retirement facilities where older people go to retire and enjoy the remainder of their days. In their yards, they take great joy in their garden decorations. Not only will you see gorgeous plant and flower arrangements, but you will also notice many other items as well. Perhaps you will see a ceramic Mother goose in a delightful raincoat followed by a trail of her children, also donning raincoats. If you’re an avid traveler who goes RVing cross country, then you have most likely seen fellow travelers putting out decorations surrounding their RV’s in RV camp grounds. An American past time favorite is of course, the infamous pink flamingo lawn decoration.

Let’s view the suburbs of everyday America. In these overly cared for yards, one will most likely see a subtle plethora of ornamentation. Maybe it is a simple pink dogwood tree in the corner of the yard with a bench beneathfamily members whom they’ve lost. It’s a way to feel connected, in that quiet sanctuary in your yard.

For the environmentally conscious garden designer, there are many paths to take in giving your lawn and garden its personality. Inexpensive solar garden lights are a very realistic, ’green’ way to light up your yard art. Be it illuminating a pebble stoned walkway, an adorable rosy cheeked garden gnome, or a stout bird feeder along the bushes, it serves its purpose in an all natural way by taking its energy from the biggest ball of energy of all…the sun. When it comes to solar yard lights, the person whose aim is to ‘go green’ will be super pleased with all the benefits this offers. Extra security in knowing that even in the far most corners of your yard are well lit, it can give you peace of mind. And that is what everybody wants in the long run. Going green gives peace of mind all the way around.

Hanging baskets are wonderful sights to behold. If a person does a little research, they can learn how to create their own hanging basket that can rival that of the local nursery. If one starts a flower bed with tiny seeds, the wait time for a bountiful garden may be increased, but if one know how to start the seeds beforehand, that time can be cut in half.

ornamental plants
When making hanging baskets, a person should choose their plants carefully. Instead of buying just the regular begonia or petunias that normally appear in a hinging basket, a person should consider buying long-trailing plants that can create volume to any home made basket.

This can make for a stunning hanging basket once the plants are fully grown. Also to consider is the color scheme. Short trailing plants will also help enhance a basket if they are placed just right. They can be planted on the sides for added color and depth.

Another thing that is critical for making bountiful hanging baskets is to be picky about the potting mix that is used. Hanging baskets are very difficult to keep moist once they dry out.

tool box garden
A way to ensure that this does not happen is to add humus based potting mix to the regular soil that one chooses. Another good tip for a hanging basket is to add a slow release fertilizer at planting and this will help to ensure that these ornamental plants thrive beyond what is expected.

Hanging baskets can be customized to reflect one’s space and personality. If a person does a little research, the right plants and soil mixture can be found so that they work in harmony together to produce amazing plants. You can even use other gardening ideas like a tool box garden and container tomatoes to increase the number of plants on the patio.

Another thing to remember that is crucial is use a good potting mix and not potting soil. Everyone who has a thumb no matter if it is black or green can make a hanging basket work for them.

The rose is a popular choice, and for good reason - it emits great aesthetic value and a sweet smell. Of course, many flowers are popular and have great stories and histories behind them, but the rose is really in a class of its own. Although red roses often are focused on, it is important not to overlook fresh purple rose.

Of course, every color of rose has such a beautiful fragrance and unmatched beauty and splendor. They guarantee excitement and appreciation from the gift holder, and the great, varied color of roses, such as buying purple roses, adds excitement and pleasure.

Romantic flowers have the intention of telling the receiver that there is much love and admiration in the air. Even going so far as saying you fell in love at first sight! The purple roses, considered by many to be mystical and magical in nature, is a symbol of beauty and sophistication, and it is a great choice as a fun, neat gift for your loved one.

Lilac, blue, and lavender spray roses colors symbolized a sense of style. They can also indicate long lasting love, elegance, finesse, and togetherness. The lighter shades as flower delivery flowers indicated true love beginning or love at first sight, with the dark shades being more symbolic of a deeper intimacy.

Everybody is aware of the arrival of delivered flowers if they come to someplace like the office. The rumor begins that the delivery truck has parked outside, each person wonders if she is the one receiving them, and the whole crowd is eagerly awaiting as they are carried along the corridor. Regardless of the occasion - whether it’s a personal celebration, a holiday, or a way of expressing someone’s love - purple roses (or blue rose delivery) send a dramatic message. They are also a particularly fine gift for a 24th anniversary, since that is the one for which the traditional color is lavender.

You may consider using roses in unexpected colors such as purple, blue, or lilac roses to lend an air of exotic fun to any occasion while creating a treasured memory for your guests. Roses have been used for a great many years to convey particular feelings. Each color communicates a different emotion or message. Your guests will delight in discovering the significance behind each color rose you have chosen to display.

The gardener in me really appreciates urban gardening because this is the area that I feel urban gardening began.

For centuries the inhabitants of Mediterranian have used the art of window box planting, hanging clay planters as they managed to garden and add beauty to their small personal spaces.

These people even knew how to compost in a small space by using containers in their homes where they added organic scrapes from their daily foods such as peelings, leftover vegetables and fruits and then adding a few worms.

Many gardeners in our cities are starting to have this European mindset. We are now seeing roof top gardens. Though most cities will not allow hanging planters and window boxes we are seeing these things on condo patios.

Community gardens are now becoming part of the urban gardening scene.

We are seeing more and more self watering containers for use on patios and hanging planters. This is a great boon for the urban gardener. In these you can plant flowers that will feed the soul and you can also plant vegetables to feed your body. Plus the working urbanite that may not be home for a few days at a time does not have to worry about the watering.

A good self watering container cuts down on the attention you need to give it. However, basically any container that has about 5 holes drilled into the bottom of it will create a good reservoir for your plantings. These types of containers will need a water catching dish or container base under them. For large, heavy containers you will do well to put some roller bases under them for easy moving around because most things you plant will need about 4 hours of sun a day. Plus strong storms may require you rolling them into a protective area.

Remember to use good organic soil. Get help and advice from your local organic nursery. The easiest plant to start with is the old stand by, the tomato! It is usually easier to buy a plant or two then to buy a pack of seeds. Cherry and grape tomatoes are wonderful in containers, especially hanging ones. Whatever kind you buy will probably need to be staked if you do not use a hanging pot.

Lettuce is always an easy urban gardening vegetable to grown. A few large pots filled with good organic soil will give you basically all you need for salads. I like to mix the salad greens or you can even buy packets of mixed greens today. Just sprinkle a few on the top of your soil and gently cover with another light layer of soil, then gently water and keep it watered. About a week or so later create another pot and do the same thing. I like my pots to be about 12 to 18 inches in diameter for this type of salad garden.

Believe it our not, one can even do cucumbers in hanging pots or basically any kind of pot. I like to grow the small pickling cucumber because they grow quickly and are delicious without peeling. Just make sure you wash them well because even though, as an organic gardener, you will not use pesticides, there are a lot of “things” in the urban air from soot to acid rain and you need to wash all you veggies before you eat them.

‘Green’ gardening with hydroponics

For anyone missing a green thumb, a farmer is making growing things a little simpler by subtracting a key ingredient.

Joe Donato with Donato’s Hydroponic House of Greens says, “Hydroponics is growing vegetables or flowers in water as opposed to soil.”

Even though the baby heads of lettuce look like they’re sitting in soil, they’re not. The roots are surrounded by clay bits or coconut husks. Then the tray is flooded with water, so the vegetable can soak up the nutrients.

“You give the plants exactly the nutrients they want so there’s no soil-borne insect because there is no soil,” says Donato.

Instead of insecticides, the Donato’s use actual insects to keep bad bugs away from their plants. Donato adds, “We use beneficial insects that are good insects that use bad insects.”

Contrary to popular belief, the vegetables don’t taste watery.

Donato says, “they taste better and there are more vitamins.”

He also uses an organic based fertilizer and recycles the water that is used in this process. Another green advantage: it’s all locally-grown, so there is no transportation involved.

Greenhouse takes heat, reuses it

Co-generation system makes hothouse part of province’s power grid

The Star reported yesterday that more greenhouse operators in Ontario are trying to save on fuel costs by switching to coal. Today’s story takes a look at one tomato greenhouse in Leamington that’s taking a greener, more innovative approach.

ESSEX COUNTY–Tiny eggs bonded to a paper tag begin to hatch, unleashing 150 parasitic wasps that go about their mission with deadly precision.

Like falcons bred to chase seagulls from airport runways, the wasps target, attack and destroy one of the few and most damaging pests found in modern vegetable greenhouses – the tomato-destroying whitefly.

“We breed our own biological control,” explains Darren Didychuk, president of Great Northern Hydroponics, a large greenhouse operator in Kingsville, Ont.

There are hundreds of egg-laden tags attached to tomato-plant stems throughout the 50-acre operation, where bug warfare has proved a more efficient and eco-friendly alternative to chemical pesticides and herbicides.

Here’s how to care for houseplants indoors

It’s November and there is no denying that the outdoor gardening season is at an end. Though I’m an avid outdoor gardener, I am not an avid indoor gardener. Sure, I have the standard issue Philodendron, Spider Plant, Wandering Jew and “Christmas” Cactus, but that’s it. This year I am going to expand on my indoor gardening for three reasons; this column, the passing of my last cat, and my youngest is old enough not to eat my plants – I hope.

I have had most of my houseplants for almost 10 years, so it’s not like I can’t grow anything indoors, it’s really been an issue of space and time. I used to have put my plants high enough so they would not get chewed up by infants or cats. I really didn’t mind if the cats chewed on them, I just didn’t like the finished product of their grazing. But most houseplants are poisonous, so if animals and children are around it’s better to keep them out of reach. Now that the demographics in my household have changed, I can put them where I want and taking care of them will be much easier since I don’t have to climb a ladder to reach them.

One of the most hazardous things that can happen to your plants is extreme weather. Many a garden has been damaged overnight because of this phenomenon. And seemingly, there is nothing we can do to stop it. Of course, if weather didn’t exist at all then we wouldn’t have those nice sunny days that are beneficial to the growth of our plants. But then again, we wouldn’t have the tragic hailstorms that tear down everything we’ve worked for so many hours to grow.

When rain starts to fall, usually the first reaction in a gardener is purejoy. After all, this means you don’t have to worry about going out and watering it manually. The natural rain fall can’t be anything but good forall your thirsty plants, can it? Well, once that same gardener starts to see the gorgeous rain drops turn into small globules of ice, usually a complete emotional breakdown is in order. I know this from experience, because when I was a blooming gardener I had my garden completely demolished by about 10 minutes of severe hail.

When I first learned my lesson on the damage hail can do, I quickly came up with a method of coping. I began to keep large clay pots within 10 feet of my garden, so that at any sign of hail I could run outside and have the plants sheltered in a matter of seconds. This saved me from being forced to watch my plants be ripped to pieces on multiple occasions. I’ve never dealt with hail more than an inch in diameter, but I’m guessing that if there had been any baseball sized chunks then those pots would have been quickly demolished.

But, as the number of fragile plants in my garden grew, it became slightly impractical to have a pot for each plant, and run outside to place each one before significant damage had already occurred. After much thought, I ended up building a horizontal, retractable screen mechanism made out of a strong but flexible wire mesh. At any sign of rain I could pull the screen out over my entire garden and have instant protection. Not only did it let the rain through, but the collected hail provided a steady drip of water for as much as a day afterwards. This project cost me several hundred dollars, and more blood, sweat, and tears than can be measured with earth dollars. Therefore I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone.

If it’s too late for you, and you’ve recently lost your precious plants to those wicked balls of ice, then you’re probably looking for some way to help the plants recover. Unfortunately there aren’t many choices for you. The best thing you can do is give them the tender care they deserve, and try to nurse them back to health over a long period of time. The several weeks after being severely damaged by hail are vital to whether the plant survives or not. If you expect more rain or wind, you should keep the plant covered. In this brittle stage, even raindrops or a strong breeze could inflict more damage.

So if you live in an area that experiences frequent hail, you should definitely have some emergency plan for protecting your plants. Sitting by and watching them be ripped to shreds should never be an option!

And they don’t have to cost thousands of even many hundreds of dollars. And of course you are adding value to your home.
